Meetic is to French online dating roughly what the baguette is to French breakfast: not the only option, but the one everyone knows. It has been around for a long time, it is aimed squarely at people looking for a real relationship, and it is part of the same group as Match. For an English speaker who has moved to France, it is often the first paid site to come up, and the first question is usually whether it is usable without fluent French.
This Meetic review answers that question first, then looks at what you can do for free, what the subscription costs at the time of writing, the things to watch (renewal, moderation, the language barrier), and how Meetic compares with eDarling and DisonsDemain, two French sites that suit older singles better.
Our verdict in 30 seconds
- Best for: singles roughly 25 to 49 looking for a serious relationship in France, especially in cities.
- Language: the site is in French; the app can display in English.
- Strengths: a large, well-known French membership, search filters, singles’ events in major cities.
- Weak points: full messaging requires a subscription, plans renew automatically, and conversations will mostly be in French.
- Skip it if: you are over 50 (try DisonsDemain) or want a guided, test-based approach (try eDarling).
Meetic in English: is it possible?
Partly. Here is what we found at the time of writing.
The meetic.fr website is entirely in French, with no language switch. The Meetic app on the French App Store, on the other hand, lists twenty supported languages, English included, so on a phone set to English the menus and buttons can appear in English. What will not change is the content: profiles are written by French members, mostly in French, and most first messages you receive will be in French too.
The good news is that many French people, especially in Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux and other large cities, are comfortable switching to English, and an international background is often seen as a plus. Say clearly in your profile that you are English-speaking and learning French (if you are). It sets expectations and quietly filters for people who are happy to mix languages. And it gives you a ready-made first date topic: their favourite word that does not exist in English.
How Meetic works
Meetic is a classic, search-led dating site. You create a profile with photos and a description, set your criteria, and browse. You can search by age, location, lifestyle and more, send likes, and receive suggestions. There is no long personality test: you decide who you want to contact, which suits people who like to choose for themselves.
Meetic also organises singles’ events in several cities. Its homepage mentions evenings and activities in places such as Paris, Bordeaux and Lyon, including free apéros. For a newcomer, this is a genuinely useful extra: meeting people in a relaxed group setting is often easier than a one-to-one date in a second language.
On safety, Meetic says that every profile description and photo is moderated, and you can report or block members. That is a reasonable baseline, but it is not identity verification, so the usual caution applies with anyone who rushes to move the conversation elsewhere or mentions money.
Is Meetic free? What you can and cannot do
Registration is free. With a free account you can create your profile, browse members and send likes. Meetic’s French homepage, at the time of writing, also invites you to chat with singles without subscribing, so some form of free exchange is offered. In practice, though, full messaging (writing and reading messages freely) is what the paid subscription is for, and that is where most of the value lies.
Our advice: complete your profile, use the free account for a few days to see how many people in your area match your criteria, and only then decide.
Meetic price at the time of writing
Meetic’s price depends on the plan length, promotions and whether you pay on the website or in the app. Two reference points:
- Plans on our partner listing start from around €24.99 per month.
- In the app, the French App Store lists, among other items, a Premium 1-week pass at €24.99, Premium 1 month at €39.99 and Premium 6 months at €79.99.
As always, the longer the plan, the lower the monthly rate, and the more you lose if you stop using it. Choose the length you will actually use.
Renewal and cancelling
Meetic subscriptions renew automatically at the end of the period unless you switch renewal off. If you paid on the website, do it in your account settings; if you paid in the app, cancel through your Apple or Google account. Deleting the app or hiding your profile does not cancel anything. Set a reminder a week before the renewal date and keep the confirmation email.
Is Meetic worth it?
For English speakers aged roughly 25 to 49 who live in a French city, want something serious and have at least basic French, yes. The membership is large and active, the search tools work well, and the events are a real bonus for newcomers. It is less convincing if your French is minimal and you do not want to make the effort, if you live in a very rural area (check the free account first), or if you are over 50, where the alternatives below are a better fit.
Meetic vs eDarling vs DisonsDemain
eDarling: for a guided, test-based approach
eDarling works differently from Meetic. You start with a personality test, and the site suggests compatible profiles. Its members skew older (40 and up is its sweet spot), and the focus is clearly on long-term relationships. With a free account you can take the test, see compatible suggestions and send smiles; seeing photos and messaging require a subscription, with plans from around €14.90 per month on our partner listing. The interface is in French, and the test relies on understanding nuanced questions, so it suits people with reasonable French.
Choose eDarling over Meetic if you prefer being guided to browsing, and if you are in your 40s or older.
DisonsDemain: for over-50s
DisonsDemain is a French site for singles over 50, from the same group as Meetic. It works on a browse-and-like model, the tone is relaxed and the members are all in the same stage of life. Profile creation, browsing and likes are free; messaging is paid, with plans from around €16 per month on our partner listing. The site is in French.
Choose DisonsDemain over Meetic if you are over 50 and would rather not be in a mixed-age pool.
Where to meet French singles if you are serious
If you are under 50 and want a relationship, open a free account on Meetic first: it is the largest serious site in France and the easiest way to see who is near you. If you are in your 40s and prefer compatibility matching, add eDarling. Over 50, start with DisonsDemain.
Free apps such as Hinge, Bumble, Tinder and happn are widely used in French cities and are a good complement if you are younger or want a more international crowd, but they are busier and less focused on commitment. Our guide to dating sites in France compares all of them, with the language of each site clearly marked.
A few tips for dating in France as an English speaker
- Write your profile in both languages, or at least add a few lines in French. It shows effort and makes you easier to find.
- Expect to be asked about your plans. Many French singles want to know whether you are staying in France, especially on serious sites.
- Use the events. A group apéro is much less intimidating than a dinner for two in your second language.
- Don’t over-translate. A message in imperfect French with a joke about your accent often lands better than a perfect but stiff paragraph from a translator.
